Our first encounter with U\u00e7makdere's Firuze wines was at one of the professional wine events. The biggest problem of those events with their tasting rooms where hundreds of wines are placed side by side is that they leave you stunned. On the one hand, during two days, you have to make maybe hundureds of stops as your industry friends are scattered almost everywhere in the hall, to record the brief information you receive, to try to memorize the wines you taste without mixing them, and on the other hand, to arrange the time you need to devote to professional tasting sessions. But during these two days, new faces that you enjoy getting to know will also enter your life. I\u015f\u0131l Bulutsuz was a gain that fit this description at that event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u00e7makdere is actually a winery with a long history. The region is already recorded as a winemaking center during the Ottoman period. The main transportation to the region, where land transportation is not very easy even today, was done by sea during the Ottoman period. The wines produced in coastal wineries were pushed into the sea in large barrels and floated out into the open. Ships waiting offshore would catch the barrels with nets, take them on board, and take them to Galata port to meet Istanbul's wine needs and also to load the wines to be exported from there.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The history of the structures that exist today dates back to the TEKELperiod which was the state monopoly for tobacco and liquors. The facility, which was put up for sale after the privatization of TEKEL, was purchased by the current operators in 2012. There has been a transition period after the change of ownership and It took some time for the winery to gain a new identity. The process that evolved into today's wines began with the emergence of an individual focusing on wine from within the family who took over the business after 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the almost chaotic event environment I described above, I\u015f\u0131l Bulutsuz caught our attention with her enthusiasm while talking to you that she felt the excitement of the wine she made in her bones. We had the opportunity to observe the expression of the same excitement again when one of their wines was awarded a gold medal in the evaluation section of the same event. When we met with I\u015f\u0131l at WAYANA, we felt that she maintained this enthusiasm and the deep emotional bond she established with the wines she made and continues to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wine is a business that demands sacrifice from its producer. Moreover, this sacrifice extends over a very long period of time. It is not an easy-to-control process that can only be shaped by the decisions made by the winemaker. As the winemaker, you are as free as the variables you cannot control allow you. Wine production, which has such a challenging nature, also has legal and political difficulties. The producer must also face the effects of this area, which varies from period to period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u00e7makdere Wines\u2019 Firuze series takes its name from the name of the stone, turqoise. We listened to the visual of the turquoise stone used on wine labels, again from I\u015f\u0131l's own words and with her excitement. As se showed us the details on the stone used as a symbol, which can only be noticed by looking carefully, we saw how even this graphic work was meticulously crafted, and the effort and love put into not only the wine, but all areas surrounding the wine.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The wines of U\u00e7makdere in the WAYANA menu reflect the passion of its producer. Even though the grapes are familiar, the interpretations added by the hands that brought them to life have differentiated the wines and their unique identities have become more evident.
