Vine has existed on our planet for millions of years. Vines have watched the birth and extinction of millions of living species that no longer exist today. When we compare the existence of human, which goes back three million years, with that of the vine, we see that we are yesterday's children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the DNA analysis methodology and tools developed by the scientific world, we live in an age where changes that were previously only 'predicted' are now reliably proven. Since DNA analyzes began to be used in criminal science, we see that the margin of error has decreased and unfair decisions have changed, both in the news we read in daily life and in TV series and movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the areas where DNA analysis is used is the grape world. Before the scientific world gained the competence to make DNA-based evaluation, scientific research on the classification of grapevines was called ampelography. Thanks to scientists studying ampelography, members of the grapevine family called VITIS were found. Ampelography was a field that was practiced with great difficulty because it relied on observation and comparison of vines and was prone to errors. However, it was still possible to reach today's knowledge thanks to the studies carried out in this field. After DNA analysis was revealed, some of the findings that were known to be correct until then were revealed to be invalid. Ampelography is much strpnger now thanks to the extra power which is coming from DNA side. This is a long topic, let's leave it to another article to be devoted to this topic alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I came across the name of Prof. Carole Meredith while working on the Gouais Blanc grape, which is the title of today's topic. At the center of the grape's story was Carole Meredith's access to Gouais Blanc vines, with the information she received from an Australian producer while working at UC Davis, now retired. In the news in Wine Enthusiast magazine, an Australian family that has been producing wine for five generations realizes that the hundred-year-old vines they are about to pull from their vineyards are the last examples of Gpuais Blanc grown commercially. They learn that Meredith is conducting research on this grape and make contact, and Gouais Blanc comes back from the brink of extinction.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Why is Gouais Blanc important? Recent research has provided information that Gouais Blanc grapes were grown in large areas in the vineyards of Medieval Europe. In the 1990s, when DNA research began, a team of 20 researchers from 10 countries conducted DNA analyzes of approximately 300 grape varieties. The results obtained from the studies have revealed detailed and surprising information about the family trees of grapes. Part of the information gathered from the researh was about Gouais Blanc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gouais Blanc, which is thought to have originated in Eastern Europe, was actually removed from the vineyards because it was not a productive wine grape. In fact, the word 'gou' in its name is derived from the French meaning to insult or to be of low rank. But Gouais Blanc has raised such children that no matter what you name them, it is unlikely that they can be replaced. Among the grapes it mothered are stars such as Chardonnay and Gamay. We can also add favorites of the wine world such as German Riesling, French Chenin Blanc and Hungarian Furmint to this list. To make a long story short, the playful mother grape Gouais Blanc has mothered 81 varieties of grapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Limited production of Gouais Blanc wine continues. There are a handful of producers, who care about ensuring the continuation of the breed and engage in business. But scientists also attach importance to the Gouais Blanc breed for its ability to adapt to changing climatic conditions over centuries. They underline that Gouais Blanc's guidance is important for grape varieties that will survive in the period of global climate change that the world is going through.
