WAYANA 301 was the fiftieth event we organized with ticketed entry, excluding special events. We opened our doors on July 18, 2022 with the WAYANA brand. Although we have not completed two years yet, we are actually very happy to have such an extensive tasting portfolio. Each tasting allowed us to meet new wine lovers. At these events, they experienced firsthand how much we value our work. They all placed WAYANA in the right place on their mental maps. By choosing us, they both increased our motivation and kept our desire to continue our journey alive despite the country's conditions that make people say 'enough is enough'. That's why we reserved the first part of the article to thank all our tasting participants for their support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our WAYANA 301 tasting was the closing event of the 2023 Fall-2024 Spring tasting season. We dedicated this event to the popular middle and upper segment wines of the year. But the biggest difference in the tasting was that this time the wines were accompanied by musical pieces. This was our first time doing this, we had to explore how we should do it. So we started working for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We took a closer look at the work carried out on wine and music by British academician Charles Spence, whose work in the field of gastronomy we closely followed while we were running our pizza restaurant in the same location before WAYANA. We did an intensive online search for the music-related experiences, observations and comments of those who write about wine, and looked at everything we could find. We tried to understand what they used as criteria when making their selections. All of these have definitely had an impact, in different weights and forms, on the choices we make. But what we found clearly showed us that this area was still an unmapped territory. So we were on our own in the decisions and the choices we would make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOW AND BASED ON WHAT FEATURES DID WE SELECT THE MUSICAL WORKS?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The birthplaces of the grapes of the endemic wines in the tasting were the starting point for us. We thought that regional kinship was a strong bond for our local grapes and chose our musical selections from local folk songs. For two of the foreign grape wines, we chose the local relationship again, we chose the music of the places where they were born or came to life. In the other two foreign grape wines, this time we included the musical genre and moved away from the local relationship. All of the choices we make are subjective, and the responsibility for the selections lies entirely with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We chose two musical pieces for each wine. One of the pieces was chosen to be slow-paced and the other to be lively and fast-paced. The approximately 90-second (with a 10-second tolerance) part of each piece was first played at a slow tempo, then the volume faded out and the second, higher-tempo piece was played. Approximately 3 minutes were allocated to each wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We made sure to choose some pieces from the more well-known ones and some from the lesser-known ones. We were wondering how awareness would affect reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We wanted to see if it would make sense if some tracks were instrumental and some included sound, so three tracks did not include sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our genre-based music choices, we went beyond local choices and played well-known and less-known pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOW DID WE CARRY OUT THE TASTING PROCESS?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in every tasting, we gave brief information to the participants. Since all the wines we chose were dry wines, we briefly summarized how dry wine is obtained and reminded the participants about the functions of the sensory organs we will use in tasting and how the characteristic features of the wine affect our sensory organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before proceeding with the tasting, we made an explanation on how we should evaluate the relationship between music and wine. We prepared a brochure for the tasting. Of the two side-by-side pages of the prepared brochure, the left one contained the sequence numbers, names and explanations of the artists performing the musical works, and the evaluation table was included on the right page, in line with the names of the works. An evaluation bar numbered from 1 to 10 was placed for each work. We asked the participants to smell and sip the wine while listening to the piece of music, question whether the music has meaning for them. If they thought that the piece of music had no effect at all, we asked them to make a choice and mark the 1 point of NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL, and if they felt that it had a pleasant effect, we asked them to make a choice in the area extending to the point 10 of VERY IMPRESSED. No one wrote their name on the evaluation piece, the information is anonymous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We did not experience any disruptions throughout the tasting event. The participants listened to the pieces with interest, made the evaluations we requested from them, and shared them with us. We will share with you a comprehensive summary of the pieces included in the event and the results of the participants' evaluations in our next article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
