Turkey doesn\u2019t have an overwhelming number of wine producers\u2014around 200, to be precise. Most of them have entered the scene in the last 25 years, which means our wine industry is relatively young when you look at the average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there are exceptions\u2014some rare pioneers whose roots trace back to the 1920s. Among them, both long-established producers and younger wineries have crafted special wines in memory of those who shaped their journey. These are not just bottles. They are gestures of gratitude, vessels of legacy. At WAYANA, we dedicate a space on our menu to these deeply personal wines.Let us introduce you to these moving stories\u2014one sip at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>

G\u00fclcihanl\u0131 Y\u0131llar \u2013 Tomurcukba\u011f<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our very first tribute wine honors Prof. Dr. Sabit A\u011fao\u011flu, a revered academic and wine pioneer. Together with his wife, he founded Tomurcukba\u011f, named after their daughter. After years of dedication, their dream took form\u2014only to be shaken by the early passing of G\u00fclcihan Han\u0131m. In her memory, Sabit Hoca blended multiple vintages of the Kalecik Karas\u0131 grape (which he helped revive post-phylloxera) into a unique wine named G\u00fclcihanl\u0131 Y\u0131llar.\n\n

\n\nOne of WAYANA\u2019s most cherished wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An\u0131 \u015earab\u0131 \u2013 \u00c7aml\u0131ba\u011f<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bozcaada is often referred to as Turkey\u2019s wine island. In 1925, Ha\u015fim Yunat\u00e7\u0131 became its first Muslim winemaker, founding what we now know as \u00c7aml\u0131ba\u011f. His great-grandson, also named Ha\u015fim Yunat\u00e7\u0131, was the fourth-generation steward of the legacy. When he passed unexpectedly in 2020, the winery released a special Kuntra wine in his honor\u2014its label simply reads An\u0131 \u015earab\u0131 (Memorial Wine).\n\n

\nWe serve it at WAYANA whenever it\u2019s available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Figen \u2013 Asmadan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asmadan, a young winery in Eceabat, was built on the vision and drive of Figen Han\u0131m. Though the company background was in a different industry, she led the establishment of the winery with passion\u2014until her life was cut short by illness. Asmadan remembered her with a Shiraz-Grenache blend named Figen, a wine born from gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuve\u00e9 Marcel Biron \u2013 Chamlija<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the founding of the Turkish Republic, the groundwork of modern winemaking was shaped by figures like Marcel Biron, a French expert appointed by TEKEL. During his 12 years in Turkey, he played a key role in introducing international grape varieties and improving native ones. Thanks to his efforts, Papaskaras\u0131 gained international recognition.\n\n

\nChamlija\u2019s tribute wine, Cuve\u00e9 Marcel Biron, is made from this very grape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HUS Juan \u2013 HUS Wines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juan Pablo Diaz Leon, co-founder of HUS Wines, passed away suddenly at age 34. Originally from Chile, he had begun shaping the vineyard in Seferihisar with his wife, Ceylan. Their friend and vineyard partner, Jos\u00e9, recalls:\n\n

\n\n\u201cWe named the vineyard plots together. One was planted with Carignan, and we called it \u2018Juan.\u2019 He never wanted a wine to carry his name\u2026 But when he left us, we knew this would be the most beautiful way to keep his memory alive.\u201d\n

\nThat Carignan wine, now labeled Juan, is a living tribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karao\u011flan Old Vines \u2013 Diren<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, a tribute to someone still among us: Orhan Diren, second-generation vintner at Diren Wines, founded in 1958. With formal training in oenology and decades of dedication, he shaped the winery\u2019s direction. The Karao\u011flan Old Vines\u2014sourced from 60-year-old vines\u2014is our newest addition to the tribute list. It honors his lifelong contribution to Turkish winemaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Memory, In Gratitude<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we serve these wines, we raise our glass to those no longer with us\u2014G\u00fclcihan Han\u0131m, Ha\u015fim Bey, Figen Han\u0131m, Marcel Biron, and Juan\u2014and toast to the continued health of Orhan Bey.\n\n
