We\u2019ll continue to share insights about labels in the future as well. Here, we listen to Kuzuba\u011f Wines\u2019 perspective on labels in Asl\u0131\u2019s own words.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div>

When we first decided to go into winemaking, we already knew how significant\u2014even crucial\u2014a wine label could be. We\u2019ve always paid attention to labels and design, and we truly enjoy looking at a beautiful piece of design.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The question of who would design our label never really echoed in our minds, because it had always been our dream to create something together with my childhood friend, designer Elif Tanman, who lives in London. As soon as we were ready, I shared the exciting news with her that the time had finally come, and we immediately began brainstorming together.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Besides deeply trusting Elif\u2019s creative eye and vision, one of the most meaningful parts for me about working with her is that, since we were ten years old, she\u2019s visited Han\u00e7alar\u2014the town where our winery and vineyards are located\u2014many times with me. She knows this town, this region, the people, and the geography intimately and has been a part of our winery dream for years. That makes it all the more special for me.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Her zaman sade, minimal ve negatif alan\u0131n daha fazla oldu\u011fu, ba\u011f\u0131rmayan, sessiz bir \u015fekilde iddias\u0131n\u0131 g\u00f6sterip ayr\u0131\u015fan bir etiket yapmak istedi\u011fimizi biliyorduk. Sadece yaz\u0131 kullan\u0131larak olu\u015fturulan tasar\u0131mlar\u0131 da \u00e7ok be\u011fenmekle birlikte, bir fig\u00fcr olmas\u0131 fikri bana hep daha s\u0131cak ve ak\u0131lda kal\u0131c\u0131l\u0131\u011f\u0131 art\u0131ran bir \u015fey olarak gelmi\u015ftir. Bu d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcnceler \u0131\u015f\u0131\u011f\u0131nda sevgili Elif ara\u015ft\u0131rmalar\u0131na ba\u015flad\u0131 ve b\u00f6lgede bulunan antik kentlerden \u00e7\u0131kar\u0131lm\u0131\u015f paralara ve bunlar\u0131n \u00fczerindeki fig\u00fcrlere denk geldi. Kimi elinde bir kadeh tutan, kimi ise \u015ferefe yapar gibi hareketler yapan bu fig\u00fcrler asl\u0131nda b\u00f6lgede bin y\u0131ld\u0131r \u015farap \u00fcretildi\u011fini de bize g\u00f6steriyorlar adeta.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Drawing inspiration from these ancient images, Elif created the figures that appear on our labels. Because wine is a drink meant to be shared and enjoyed together, she designed figures who are drinking wine together and having a good time. Then my sister\u2019s husband, Tom Fellows, who is an artist, added a few small touches to Elif\u2019s initial drawings and refined all of them in a consistent illustration style. In the end, we achieved a label that is simple, prioritizes negative space, and yet feels playful and friendly. We like to think that our winery and our wines express themselves with elegance and subtle confidence. So, our labels are very much in harmony with the overall philosophy of Kuzuba\u011f.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The figures on the labels of our four single-varietal red wines (\u00d6k\u00fczg\u00f6z\u00fc, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) come from the various representations of the Tree of Life, a motif deeply rooted in the weaving traditions of our region. The Tree of Life symbolizes eternity, reminding us that these grapes and wines have always existed and always will.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

On our \u00d6k\u00fczg\u00f6z\u00fc\u2013Shiraz blend, the \u201celi belinde\u201d motif we used symbolizes fertility, which holds special meaning for us. The use of the motif twice on the label represents the blend of the two grape varieties. Thanks to Elif\u2019s redesign of this motif, we created a unique version that belongs just to us. This wine, born from two different grape varieties coming together, feels like Elif and me walking arm in arm through our childhood days. \ud83d\ude0a\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Our wine Hemh\u00e2l has one of our most sophisticated labels, but even there, we didn\u2019t want to stray far from our own style and design language. For this Bordeaux blend\u2014the Kuzuba\u011f interpretation\u2014we wanted to create a Kuzuba\u011f version of traditional kilim patterns. Elif designed a motif based on the letter K, whose curling corners also echo the way vines wrap around trellis wires. To keep the wine\u2019s name in the spotlight, we printed it in bold letters, while the motif was only embossed onto the paper, giving it a subtle, mysterious presence without being loud.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In Turkey, wine is often perceived as a very serious drink. The people who make it are serious, those who drink it are serious, everything feels so serious. But in reality, we are creating something connected to pleasure. That\u2019s why we didn\u2019t want our labels to feel overly rigid or severe. Traditional, Old World wine labels often leave a big impression on us, sometimes making us associate appeal with gold foils and flashy finishes. But we\u2019ve noticed that people who love modern and different designs tend to really appreciate our labels. And that\u2019s completely normal\u2014tastes and colors are personal, after all! \ud83d\ude0a\n\nUltimately, what we hope for is that our labels are seen as fun, simple, expressive, bold without being loud, and well-designed. Of course, whether someone likes them or not is entirely up to personal taste. At the end of the day, a good label might convince someone to buy a wine once\u2014but to make them come back and buy it again, what really matters is what\u2019s inside the bottle. That\u2019s something we should never forget!<\/p>\r\n
