We used it to assess the Turkish wine sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In this framework, the subject is evaluated in terms of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. The initials give the model its name: SWOT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Two of these headings\u2014Strengths and Opportunities\u2014are where we may find the light on the horizon. Let\u2019s start with Turkey\u2019s strengths, then move to the opportunities they create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TURKEY\u2019S STRENGTHS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Vineyard area \u00a0<em>(ranked fifth in the world)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diversity of Vitis vinifera grape varieties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A small but highly skilled private production sector<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Steady growth in the number of wine grape varieties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emerging wine routes tied to culture and gastronomy tourism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The historic advantage of being part of wine\u2019s earliest story<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD FOR TURKEY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to weaknesses, the public sector tops the list. Under current conditions, improvement in this area seems unlikely.\nThis is a major gap\u2014but it\u2019s the reality we face.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In this piece, I invite you to think about how we can turn our existing strengths into real opportunities without state support.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What opportunities does our vineyard area offer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey is one of the largest grape producers in the world and the global leader in dried grapes.\nIn the alcoholic beverages industry (including distilled spirits), only about 10\u201312% of grapes are used\u2014of which just a quarter goes into winemaking.\nIn other words, there is no real barrier to increasing wine\u2019s share of grape production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What can our Vitis vinifera diversity bring?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Italy is considered the global leader in registered Vitis vinifera varieties, with 545, followed by France with 210. About 350 Italian varieties are actively used in winemaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey\u2019s Tekirda\u011f Viticulture Institute records 1,459 registered grape varieties. After removing synonyms and duplicates, roughly 850 remain\u2014more than Italy and France combined.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our misfortune is that, unlike other European countries, we have not carried out the same legal registration processes, nor identified how many of these grapes are suitable for winemaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is there an advantage in having few but skilled producers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey has around 200 active producers. Given low domestic consumption, even this number faces challenges in sales.\nWhat unites them is a passion for wine and the private financial means to bear production costs. Their modest profit expectations make it easier to keep going.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This situation means the number of producers large enough to qualify as \u201cindustrial\u201d is fewer than ten\u2014far too few to make an export impact on the global wine market.\nYet Turkey remains perfectly suited for small- and medium-scale winemaking. The fact that producer numbers keep rising despite every restriction and obstacle is proof of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does the steady growth in wine grape varieties mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, before WAYANA, when we first began serving wine at our previous establishment, Turkey had 26 registered wine grapes, with wines made from 20 of them. By 2025, that number exceeded 80, including newly tasted varieties. In the years ahead, there are dozens\u2014perhaps hundreds\u2014more we have yet to discover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Younger generations are drawn to experience-driven events. For both local and international wine lovers, Turkey is an unmatched paradise waiting to be explored.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our only task is to make sure they hear about this paradise before they miss the chance to see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How can more and better wine routes help?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first serious attempt at wine tourism in Turkey\u2014Trakya Vineyard Route\u2014was launched with state support but died at birth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It needs to be rebuilt and revitalized.\nThe Urla Vineyard Route, by contrast, began as a civil initiative and continues to grow successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last two years, smaller-scale routes like the \u00c7al Vineyard Road and the Lydia Ancient Vineyard Route have been added.\nTalks are underway for routes in Cappadocia, Troy, and Kalecik.\nCombining Turkey\u2019s archaeological and ethnographic wealth with gastronomy offers extraordinary potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does it mean to be part of wine\u2019s birthplace?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey is home to the land where the wild vine was first tamed and wine was first made. This is not a competition\u2014it is history\u2019s gift to us.\nTo write the history of wine without including Anatolia is to leave the record incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey has yet to produce a scholarly history of wine. One can only hope we will have the means to do so someday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even without such a history, just three examples show the identity \u201cAnatolian Wines\u201d could carry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">&bull; The Anatolian Civilizations Museum in Ankara houses more archaeological wine artifacts than any other museum in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">&bull; Mount Ararat, accepted in sacred texts as the resting place of Noah\u2019s Ark\u2014the first vintner\u2014is in Turkey. Our neighbor Armenia, a rising star in wine, often uses photographs of Ararat (from their side) in promotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">&bull; Troy, setting of Homer\u2019s epics that form the foundation of Western literature, is in \u00c7anakkale. Yet we do not fully claim the Iliad and Odyssey as our own Anatolian heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IS THERE LIGHT AHEAD FOR TURKISH WINE?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the points above do not inspire hope, perhaps the reason lies in the fatalism this land often breeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would it be easier if the state supported these efforts? Certainly. But that option is not on the table today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, should we simply complain and leave it to fate?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have the vision, expertise, and human capital to create an organized promotional program for the wine sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A collective model for Turkish wine could help us break that pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There are NGOs working under various wine-related names. If these groups coordinated their efforts, we could achieve much\u2014starting with analog and digital publications that showcase what we have.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With such publications, the Turkish wine sector could tell its story, present Turkey as a destination worth knowing, and secure a lasting place on the map for global wine lovers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That would be one of the greatest gifts and legacies we could leave to our children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Here, we call on all organizations with \u201cwine\u201d in their name to lend a hand to wine.\nWe believe the sector\u2019s stakeholders will quickly realize just how much strength we actually have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><b>A FINAL WORD<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With our small structure, we see it as our duty to be the voice of the richness described above.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ours is the ant\u2019s slow walk to Baghdad. You know the ending to that tale: when told, \u201cYou\u2019ll never reach Baghdad at this pace,\u201d the reply is, \u201cThen we\u2019ll die on the road to Baghdad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we fail to build a collective identity as industry players, we will be doomed to tell our children yet another story of a missed opportunity\u2014and we will likely have died on that road.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">But at least we will be able to say: We did all we could.<\/p>\n<\/div><!-- .vgblk-rw-wrapper -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u015earap konusunda yay\u0131nc\u0131l\u0131k yapan kurulu\u015flar\u0131n d\u00fczenli olarak yeniledikleri ba\u015fl\u0131klar aras\u0131nda yeni \u015farap b\u00f6lgelerine daima yer verilir.
