THE EFFECT OF WINE GLASS ON FLAVOR
Let's say it from the beginning: you can drink wine with whatever you want. Whether with a stemmed goblet, glass, coffee mug or even a bottle. This is entirely up to you, your personal preference. But do not forget that using a glass suitable for the wine you drink to enjoy the wine has effects that will please you. The bottom line: the form of the wine glass directly affects the flavor of the wine. We also use glasses suitable for wines in the services at our WAYANA wine house in Kadıköy, Istanbul.
Particularly those who attend wine tasting events will remember. We include 9 categories under the heading of wine styles. As a matter of fact, the common features of the wines in these categories also tell us the features that should be found in glasses. Let's take a quick look at the characteristics of wine styles by which glasses are selected.
Smaller glasses are preferred for white wines than for red wines. In this way, it is aimed to preserve the temperature and floral aromas of the wine better, the acidic structure of the wine to be more pronounced and the aromas to be felt stronger as it is closer to the nose. It is preferred that the rim width of full-bodied white wine glasses be wider than that of light-bodied white wines.
It is appropriate to use three main glasses for red wines. Large, wide-mouthed and deep glasses are used for bodied wines such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux blend. This makes it easier for the ethanol in the wine to volatilize, and the nose detects complex aromas more easily. In addition, the wide goblet mouth provides a softer drink of wine. Medium bodied wines such as Syrah, Zinfandel, Malbec give good results in a standard size red wine glass. The wine drunk from the smaller rim diameters of these glasses meets our tongue with smaller steps, thus the spicy flavors are softened. For light bodied red wines such as Pinot Noir, Gamay, glasses with a wide mouth but a slightly smaller volume are suitable. Wide mouth provides better perception of rich aroma.
Sparkling goblets have distinctive narrow rims and long forms. Although it is difficult to stand on the table ergonomically, they are the preferred glasses because they are both stylish and reflect the dynamism of sparkling wine.
Small-volume and narrow-mouthed glasses are also preferred for dessert wines. This slows down the volatility of alcohol.
Let's leave the glasses according to the grape types, which is a controversial subject, for another article.
